Thanks for the great product review and comparison! I have been considering these three options for my next desk chair. The seminal Aeron has an established reputation that's impossible to ignore, but it's hard to imagine that other brands/models 10+ years younger couldn't perform as well or better, so I'm glad to find you approve so highly of the Leap.

At first I assumed the Mirra to be the Aeron's successor, they're priced similarly here (Australia), I am interested to know why you considered it so inferior. There is also the Herman Miller "Embody", I'm interested to hear if anyone has had any experience with them, though I find it hard to imagine they would be twice as good as the Leap (therefore justifying the extreme price tag).

Just a follow up. I have bought a new aeron and I need to give it the thumbs up. So this year I have bought a new Leap and a new Aeron ( size C ). I believe HM have made some subtle improvements to this model over the years. I believe people pay too much for the older models ( Aeron ).

I'm glad I have both and they are different chairs for sure. The Leap took me a long time to find the 'sweet spot' etc.

I have another excellent chair which is a Kineta by K&N. Looks a bit like the Think chair by Steelcase.

Something wrong with your Aeron. On mine it takes just 1 (as ONE) rotation to adjust the back support. 5 sec job.

I bought a Leap chair off Steelcase in Sydney. I wanted to choose the colour so they did an order from the US for me. Took 10 to 12 weeks. That was OK. Quite happy with it.
I had a second hand Aeron for a few months and did not really like it. It looked great but was not really comfortable and did not work as a computer chair. Seemed to be better as a chair for just sitting in. I suspect the gas lift might have been a bit soft. I would like to try a new Aeron and see what that is like. As I said I like the look of them but I have my doubts about them. Old design and quite basic in it's functions. But they look great.
The Leap is a very nice chair though cost me $1200.

Thanks for letting everyone know the that a Leap is a great buy. I've been through five chairs ranging from $300 to $920 in my 10 years of software development. The second chair was a Leap, and it still rings as the best. (Why I bought more has to do with wanting something at home as well, then moving from the US to Tasmania.) I will hunt for a Leap, possibly buying one in Melbourne then carrying it back in my van across the Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania. Thanks for the article.

Nice review John :)

For me, aesthetics are a big deal, and personally I find the Leap to be way too understated. It just looks like a normal chair to me...

Perhaps if it came in a mesh finish, it might interest me a little more. I should probably test drive the leap before judging the book by its cover.

As for the Aeron - yes, it does have a hefty price tag, but it does offer 12 years warranty (which is a really long time for any kind of product that get's used every single day for hours at a time) and from what I've read in my research, the mob at Herman Miller provide fantastic after-sales support!

What kind of warranty does the Leap offer and what price did you end up getting your Leap for?

Cheers,
Marc

Hi John,

It looks like I've embarked on a similar jjourney to you - and like you I think I'm going to go with the Leap.

I tested both today down here in Melbourne and really agree with you when you say the Aeron is showing its age. The Leap felt immediately more comfortable and really like the way it reclines much more than the Aeron.

I can get the Leap for about $960+GST which seems OK to me (compared to $1380(inc. GST) for the Aeron).

Read read & many happy hours sitting!

Hi John - great piece on the Leap chair. I'm looking for one too, but in Indonesia, which might prove even more of a challenge. I've spoken to Steecase and I've also been quoted 10 - 12 weeks. And import duty and freight costs are prohibitive. I can get a good deal if I buy 10 though....

Hmmm.

Thanks for the piece though. Reinforces my commitment to get hold of one of these chairs...
